A Chapter
from Hidden Agency
It was six o'clock in the morning
when Sadie went into the spare bedroom.
“The office called and our package is
in Japan,” she said.
“We better go and call Gaines to find
out where exactly it went,” Hawks said and climbed out of bed.
As they walked in the office, the
other agents looked at him a little strangely.
He called Gaines and found him still at the office.
“Good morning, Steve,” he said.
“Didn't expect to find you still
there, since it's the middle of the night?”
“Well it's been a long day, that's
for sure. The package is still in the
terminal. I have two agents sitting on
it right now. They're impersonating
airmen, waiting to go back to the states and are cleaning the terminal as a job
until they're supposed to leave. We have
been getting some pressure from the Commander of Fifth Air Force to tell the
Japanese.”
“Tell the Commander he can call me on
secure voice here at Sadie's office and I'll talk to him directly. I want to know when and where the package
goes and I don't want anything done until I get over there, understand?”
“Yes, sir. I'll call the Commander when we are through
and get him out of bed. That should make
him happy,” Ross said sarcastically.
“I don't care what the hell he thinks
or feels. If I'm not here when you call
about the package, have them get a hold of me.
Sadie and I have a date with an airman she picked up last night.”
“An airman? Boy, her standards must be dropping,” Ross
laughed. “I'll call as soon as I know
something.”
“Very well, talk to you later.” Hawks hung up the phone.
“Sadie, we need to make sure that
microphone works better than it did last night.
I want to be able to hear both sides of the conversation this time or
I'm pulling you out,” he said compassionately.
“It's supposed to be working
now. Want to try it out?”
“You go ahead. I want to call Washington and see what Diana
might have for me from the President.”
She nodded and walked out the door.
It was eleven thirty when Sadie
reentered the office, leaned over the desk, and said with a smile on her face,
“Are you going to lunch? I know another
place that has great food.”
“Sure, why not?” Hawks said and
closed the file he was reading.
As they left, Sadie told her
secretary where she would be and Hawks could have sworn that she said home.
As Sadie was driving, she all of a
sudden said, “Don’t you ever listen to me?”
“What do you mean do I ever listen to
you?”
“I was just talking to you and you
didn't hear a word I said.”
“Sorry. I was going over these plans for tonight and
I guess I wasn't listening to you.” He
returned to his plans.
“Okay Steve, what's up? Why are you ignoring me?” She glanced at him
quickly before returning her attention to the road.
“Well, if you must know, I'm not sure
where our professional lives end and our personal lives begin.”
“Where do you want to draw the line?”
she said smartly.
“I'm not sure.”
The rest of the drive to her place
was quiet, neither of them spoke. As
they pulled into her drive, they noticed a car across the street with two men
in it pull in behind them. It was two of
the agents from Sadie's office. They had
come by to tell Hawks that Mike had called.
When they got inside, he called Mike.
“Hello Mike, what's up?”
“Jam paid another visit to the gun
shop. Wayne said Jam placed a big order
that would take over a week to fill.”
“Have somebody keep on top of Jam and
find out if he has any partners in this deal.
Then get out here for tonight's operation. That’s just the news I
needed. Now maybe Sadie can arrange a
weapon’s deal.” He hung up.
“Steve, why don't you go out to the
whirlpool, while I fix lunch?” Sadie yelled from the kitchen. “There are some towels and suits out there in
the white cabinet.”
“Okay, a whirlpool might be just what
I need,” he said and walked out to the closed-in back porch.
It wasn't long before Sadie came out
the door carrying a tray of egg rolls and wearing a robe. As she handed him the tray, she let her robe
fall to the ground and there she stood in all of her beauty. She climbed in and said, “I don't know how I
could have ever done without this whirlpool.”
He hadn't thought about it for some
time, but she did have a great body. As
they sat there letting the warm water sooth their bodies, she moved over closer
and asked him again the same question that she had asked in the car.
“Where do our personal lives begin?”
He was slow in answering her, so she
just took an egg roll and began eating.
He was thinking of how pleased he was that Sadie seemed so anxious to
pursue a relationship. He hadn't seen
her, socially, since becoming Director.
“I guess they begin when we are away
from the office,” He said, leaning over and kissing her. She responded as if she hadn't kissed anyone
in a long time, with a long kiss. They
moved from the whirlpool to the bedroom and just as they got into bed, the
phone rang. It was one of her agents,
“Boss, is Director Hawks there?”
“Yes,” she said into the
speakerphone.
“He's needed back at the office. The President's office called.”
“We'll be there shortly,” she said
disgustedly.
“You stay here and get ready for your
date and I'll go back and call him,” he said tenderly.
*
It was three-thirty when Hawks
entered the office and the President's secretary was on the phone once
again. He told Sadie's secretary he'd be
in Sadie’s office. As he picked up the
phone, the secretary told him to hold one for the President. Finally, there was a click of a changed
connection and then the President's voice.
“Hello Steve. What is going on with this General in
Japan? The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
called and said that the General was very upset.”
“Sir, I can only tell you that we
didn't brief the Japanese on what was going on.”
“When are you expecting to do so?” he
said anxiously.
“When I get there and after we have
all the players identified here and know where the package is going. Also, we found out that another shipment is
being set up for next week, so we're trying hard to find everyone and
everything before that shipment goes out.”
“Very well,” he said with a
sigh. “I'll call the Joint Chief and
tell him to have that General cool his heels until you get there. I hope this doesn't take too long. You know, the longer it takes, the more
chance of a scandal taking place, and we don't need that. I don't want them thinking that we are hiding
something from them,” he said with a sound of desperation in his voice.
“Yes, sir. I promise it'll be over by next week.” He hung up.
Another
Chapter from Hidden Agency
As they approached Sadie's, Hawks was wondering what to do
about this new twist in the operation.
Should he let Sadie get deeper involved or pull her out now before
something happened. He knew ATF would
have the weapons here in two days, so that part was taken care of. What about Sadie's safety? He wasn't sure he wanted her to take the
chance of being hurt.
"What?
Oh, I'm sorry. I was lost in
thought," Hawks said quickly.
Sadie sighed
and once again told him, "You never listen to me. Are you coming in or are you just going to
sit there all night?" She walked
toward the door of her home.
"Yes, I
coming," he said as he climbed out of the car. By the time he got in the house Sadie was
nowhere to be seen. "I'm going to
take a shower if you don't mind," Hawks yelled from the hallway. "Where are the towels?"
"They're
in the closet in the hallway," Sadie said, her voice echoing a little from
somewhere far-off in the house.
As he was
standing under the hot, steamy water, he could feel the presence of
something. The next thing he knew, the
shower door opened and in climbed Sadie.
He noticed again how great her tanned body looked. As they stood under the water, they kissed
and held each other tight. The desire
grew in both of them and they went directly to the bed without drying off, just
as the clock struck four a.m.
Sadie was just
falling off to sleep when the phone rang.
Hawks remembered telling her no phone calls, but since she was sleeping
he untangled his arm from her long blond hair, that was flowing across his
chest, and grabbed the phone not giving any thought to what the other agents
might think when he answered.
"Hello,
Steve," Mike said as he answered.
"Yes,
what's up?"
"Well,
for one thing, it's six-thirty in the morning, and I just received a call from
Franklin's office. They said the
shipment would be delayed longer. The
gun shop was held up last night and most of the weapons were taken."
"Great. That gives us time to get our weapons
shipment in and have it delivered. Get
with ATF and tell them we need that shipment today. I want the serial numbers recorded and the
infra red dust put on them."
"I
already called ATF--the shipment will be here tonight," Mike said
sharply. "I've also arranged to
have the weapons placed in the storage area so Sadie will have them to
deliver."
"Okay. We'll be in about noon. See you then," Hawks said.
The telephone
had awakened Sadie and she rolled over against him as he was hanging up the
phone. He told her what Mike had said,
but all she seemed to want to do was what they had done for the past two
hours. After seeing the way she looked at
him, he took her in his arms and they made love again.
